There is no 'Use simple file sharing' checkbox in the Folder Options in Vista - you must be thinking of XP. There is a 'User Sharing Wizard' tickbox, but unchecking it has no effect. In XP, this procedure turns on the Security tab on *folder* properties; it does not affect the Network Connection properties page.
I'm having the same issue - I need 802.1x on a wired connection and cannot find how to enable it. I have referred to https://www.microsoft.com/technet/itsolutions/network/evaluate/new_network.mspx#EUGAE which described how to configure it using either a Group Policy setting (Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Wired Network (IEEE 802.3) Policies) or using the the netsh wired context at the command line. The GP key listed does not exist, and when I type netsh wired, the netsh program returns "The following command was not found: wired."
Has 802.1x for wired connections actually been implemented in Vista Beta 2 or is it coming in a later build?

I was also having issues with the authenication tab not showing up, you need to enable the service for the tab to appear, it is disable by default in Vista.
Services.msc --> enable Wired AutoConfig Service
Hope this helps.

In Vista 802.1x is disable by default. Go to Administrative Tools --> Services and enable Wired AutoConfig Service, this will get you the authentication tab.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Tim - that's the step I was missing. Have to admit that after everything I did try I feel a bit dim for not spotting that!
Nice of Microsoft to document that it is turned off by default too...
